262592  Guide the lifting and positioning of loads  Level 3  NQF Level 03
253582  Lift and move a load using manual lifting equipment and tackle  Level 2  NQF Level 02

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The qualifying learner is capable of:

Lifting, positioning and securing loads in accordance with safety legislation requirements and industry procedures for work conducted at heights well above ground level. Demonstrate knowledge of Slinging methods, Standard formulas for calculation of mass of final loads in the hook, Techniques for evaluating ground conditions and overhead hazards, Methods and measures for the safe control of loads during lifting procedure, Materials and methods used for fixing, anchoring, bracing, supporting and securing loads

The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

Learners who master the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the development of a professional community of Structural Erectors who are able to competently use science and technology to lift, position and secure loads.

In addition, the learner's ability to interpret and carry out instructions in a competent manner will lead to enhanced quality of workmanship and reduce the costs associated with work having to be redone and the resultant over-run on costs and deadlines.

An enhanced understanding of safety legislation and safety common sense will lead to a notable reduction in the high and often fatal risks associated with work conducted at heights well above ground level.
