PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the core category of the NQF Level 4 National Certificate in CTFL Mechanician Processes. Learners who are assessed competent with this unit standard are able to identify symptoms of system malfunctions, identify and select appropriate instruments, apply logical and systematic fault finding approaches as well as test electronic equipment and machinery for compliance. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained the National Certificate in CTFL Mechanician Processes at NQF Level 3 or equivalent qualification. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Verbal or written questioning of mechanicians includes visual, sound and timing of occurrences.
  • Observation of machinery includes visual, hearing, smelling and touching.
  • Fault finding data includes data direct observation and measurement.

    The relevant symptoms are established by verbal or written questioning of mechanicians in accordance with company policies and procedures.

    Relevant symptoms are established by direct observation of machinery in relation to standard industry definitions and terminology.

    Symptoms are associated to system malfunctions according to standard operating policies and procedures.

    Faults and their causes are located without trial and error replacement of parts in accordance with standard testing methods.

    Fault finding methods are logical and are explained according to laid down procedures.

    Fault finding methods are repeated and the results are consistent and appropriate to company production plans.

    Faults are rectified promptly in accordance with manufacturers specifications.

    Incidents of fault re-occurrences are identified and action is taken to prevent re-occurrences for continuing in accordance with company policies and procedures.
