PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the needs of visible control of passenger carrying and goods vehicles that are operated by various industries on a public road. It provides the learner with accessibility to be employed within the traffic arena with specific reference to law enforcement at traffic control centres and weighbridges. This also provides the learners with the flexibility to pursue different careers in the broader road transportation environment. Overloading of passenger carrying and goods vehicles not only causes a tremendous amount of damage to the country's roads but also contributes to the serious problem of maintaining road safety on our roads.

This unit standard also allows for transformation with the traffic policing profession, as learners become models for other employees/learners. This attracts quality people and allows for the aspirations of people to be part of the traffic policing profession. The recognition of prior learning will formalise informal and non-formal leaning and learners will be able to obtain credits towards a national qualification.

Learners credited with this unit standard is capable of:
  • Balancing constitutional and legal rights of individuals with the competence to legally infringe those rights in the service of protecting the road infrastructure and maintaining safety on the roads.
  • Identifying problem areas with regard to routes, times and offenders.
  • Performing systematic vehicle checks in order to promote safety with the environment and the road as well as for other road users.
  • Identifying possible overloaded vehicles through effective audio and visual or electronic screening of passenger carrying and goods vehicles.
  • Determining permissible masses carried that legally allowed on various passenger carrying and goods vehicles as well as combinations of vehicles through the effective utilization of the static scale.
  • Supporting a criminal investigation by gathering initial information and evidence of a criminal offence with regard to overloading of passenger carrying and goods vehicles and attending to court.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The competence attained to achieve this unit standard includes evaluation of information regarding loads such as the general particulars of driver, vehicle(s) and cargo; manufacturers specifications; tyre specifications are obtained and determined; measurements to determine bridge formula; consignment notes, abnormal permits, cross border permits and other relevant documentation is obtained from driver. Loads can include livestock, dangerous goods, perishable substances, abnormal loads, etc. Relevant documentation can include registers, occurrence books, files, etc.
