PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Manufacturing Engineering and Technology field.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
Plan for and execute safe removal and installation of specialised sensing devices.
This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The following knowledge, skills, and attitude are required:
  • Safety procedures according to statutory and manufacturer requirements.
  • Basic electrical safety.
  • Use of hand tools. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Measurement source includes but is not limited to pneumatic and hydraulic, electrical and electronic

    The range of Specialized Sensing Devices includes but is not limited to strain gauges, load cells, proximity switches, weigh feeders, scales, etc.

    Caring for Specialized Sensing Devices includes but is not limited to removing, replacing, adjustment or setting up, cleaning, lubricating and tightening.

    Safety precautions include the use of all personal protective equipment, electrical and fire protection, process isolation.

    Requirements include but are not limited to Statutory requirements, National Standards and manufacturers specifications.

    The tools are correctly selected according to the job requirement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The repair manuals, specifications and drawings are correctly selected according to the job requirement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The hazards associated with the use of Specialized Sensing Devices are recognised and necessary precautions taken according to workplace and manufacturers procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Remove and install specialized sensing devices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The tools are correctly selected, set up and used according to job requirements and manufacturers specifications.

    The personal protective equipment applicable to the job is worn. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Correctly identify and isolate/de-isolate the process associated with Measurement, Control and Instrumentation and electrical equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The Specialized Sensing Devices are removed, cleaned, inspected and installed according to workplace practices and/or manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Establish correct operating conditions.

    Calibrate specialized sensing devices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct tools, calibration and test equipment and relevant manuals/data sheets are selected for the calibration procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The calibration, test and specialized sensing devices are correctly prepared for the calibration process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The specialized sensing devices are calibrated within the tolerances specified by the manufactures calibration manuals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The calibration sheets and associated documentation is accurately completed. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
