PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to gain insight into the broad process by which the Bible came to be written and more specific knowledge of the compilation and formation of selected Biblical books.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Show how, in general, texts emerge from historical and political contexts
  • Show how selected Biblical texts grew within historical and political contexts
  • Show how the whole of the Bible (the canon) came to be formed
  • Describe how this affects and relates to the 'authority' of the Bible 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to have competence in Mathematical Literacy and Communication at Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context apply to the whole Unit Standard:
  • To include an overview of the process whereby the whole of the Bible was written
  • To include more detailed information about how selected Biblical books were written
  • To include a description of how the canon of Scripture was formed
  • To link the historical formation of the Bible with understandings of its 'authority'

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Show how texts emerge from specific historical and political contexts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Texts are selected that cover Biblical in consultation with colleagues and learners. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A maximum of four texts is chosen.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The conditions prevailing during the time the texts were written are described with reference to the prescribed texts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Elements of the texts are identified and listed to show how they were affected by the prevailing conditions and events. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Elements of the texts are identified and listed to show how they influenced prevailing and subsequent conditions and events. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Show how selected Biblical books reflected their historical and political contexts. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    At least 5 books in the Old Testament and 5 in the New Testament.

    Selected Biblical books are placed on a time line in order to contextualise their content. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Links are made between content and context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The value of the books is applied to contemporary society to determine whether they are still relevant today. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Show how the canon of the Bible emerged from historical and political contexts. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    From 2000 BCE to 300 CE. All canonical books of the Bible to be included, bearing in mind the range of traditional Christian understandings of which Biblical books are 'canonical', i.e. are considered to be authoritative.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    As many as possible of the Biblical books are placed on a time line as representative of the main events and thinking that shaped society. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Links are made between content and context of the books in order to determine their significance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The meaning and significance of 'canon' for the Christian Church is explained and discussed in order to assist the learner to evaluate the selected books. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The canonical books are identified and listed with the help of the established criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reasons are given for the differences in Christian traditions regarding what is 'canonical'. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe the relationship between the formation of the Bible and the 'authority' of Scripture.

    A range of notions of 'authority' and 'inspiration' is described, as used by traditions within the Christian Church.

    Links are made between 'authority' and the formation of the Bible within an historical and political context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The relevance of the 'authority' of the Bible is discussed in relation to the authority of texts in contemporary society.
