PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to gain a basic competence in Christian pastoral care in relation to those affected and infected by HIV/AIDS.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Provide basic information about the disease and its impact, and identify the myths surrounding the virus;
  • Empathise with those who are infected and affected and challenge wrong approaches;
  • Describe basic care procedures;
  • Offer a Christian response to HIV/AIDS. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole Unit Standard:
  • Includes both scientific information as well as the popular understandings and myths surrounding the epidemic
  • Christian responses to those affected as well as those infected are described

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Provide basic information about the disease and its impact. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The causes and effects of the virus are simply explained in language that is easily understood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The impact of the disease on individuals and society is evaluated through surveys and studies on the impact of the disease on the economy, industry, education and health services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effects of HIV/AIDS on the individual's personal Christian spirituality are identified through observation of patients' suffering, insecurity, neglect or rejection and despair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The role of the Church in the life of HIV/AIDS patients is identified and explained by relating spiritual and other support to the needs of those who are affected. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify and critique misconceptions about the virus. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Misconceptions about HIV/AIDS are listed from personal experience and observation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    At least three should be dealt with.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The psychological and social consequences of the misconceptions are identified as a means of countering their impact. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of the misconceptions on the individual and corporate Christian spirituality is discussed in order to address the needs of those affected by HIV/AIDS. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Empathise with those who are infected and affected, challenging wrong approaches. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The attitudes of the public towards people who are infected with HIV/AIDS are listed and discussed in order to dispel misconceptions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The attitude of the public towards people who are affected are identified and discussed in order to address misconceptions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Affected persons include are AIDS orphans, parents and siblings of infected people, their colleagues in the workplace.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The needs of infected and affected persons are identified in order to provide the necessary and appropriate support. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A simple presentation explaining the needs and appropriate responses is produced through group discussions and consultation with people affected by HIV/AIDS. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Christian support is expressed through commitment to ministry to people affected by HIV/AIDS.

    Describe basic care procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A series of care procedures in relation to infected people is outlined in accordance with approved health and welfare, medical and counselling prescriptions and practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Care procedures include attention to environment, nutrition, health and spirituality.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A series of care procedures in relation to affected people is outlined in accordance with approved health and welfare, medical and counselling prescriptions and practices. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The description includes awareness of social support such as disability grants, anti-retroviral treatment and similar strategies.
