PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for all people involved in the assessment and classification of agricultural products, livestock and game.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the different types of agricultural products.
  • Assessing agricultural products characteristics and production potential.
  • Explaining the different species of livestock and game.
  • Assessing livestock and game breed, physical characteristics, live weight and breeding or production potential.
  • Classifying agricultural products ,livestock and game for sale.
  • Assessing agricultural products, livestock and game market potential and establishing their market-related value. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Mathematical Literacy and Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Agricultural products will include maize, wheat, vegetables, fruit, flowers, herbs, bulbs, seeds, wool, mohair, carcasses, cured hides and skins.

    Classify agricultural products according to their characteristics and production potential.

    Different types of agricultural products are listed and identified as per industry specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The agricultural products received for sale are classified using the organisation's classification system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An estimate is made of the condition of agricultural products offered for sale to ensure that the products fall within the acceptance range of the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The production potential of the agricultural products offered for sale is estimated to ensure that it falls within the acceptance range of the organisation.

    Classify types of livestock and game according to their characteristics and production potential.

    Classify the different types of livestock and game and assess the characteristics and production potential of sale stock. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different species of livestock that could be offered for sale are listed and identified in terms of commonly accepted profiles in the sector. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Livestock and game offered for sale are classified and sexed according to the commonly accepted profiles in the sector and recorded according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Breed is identified in accordance with breed society standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An estimate is made of the age, weight, condition and frame score of animals to ensure that they are inside the acceptance range as specified in the breed society standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Health of livestock and game offered for sale is assessed to ensure it falls within the acceptance range of the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Livestock and game accepted for sale are recorded in organisational records according to organisational procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Determine the market value of agricultural products, livestock and game accepted for sale. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The current demand for sale items is determined by seeing what number of livestock and game and what quantity of agricultural products are available from other suppliers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The approximate selling price of the livestock, game and agricultural products are determined using prices advertised in the media for similar stock and prices realised at other sales in the area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Target market is identified using geographic and demographic factors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Advertisements for the sale goods are designed for the identified target group.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
