PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for people who are in the Fundraising sector.

In particular, this Unit Standard will enable the learner to:
  • Analyse the sector in which a fundraising organisation operates
  • Provide a profile of a fundraising organisation
  • Establish a database of donors who contribute to similar organisations
  • Develop a fundraising strategy

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Analyse the sector in which a fundraising organisation operates. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The distinguishing features of a fundraising organisation are outlined in a report to determine the sector in which it operates, its modus operandi, its donor base and its fundraising strategy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The fundraising organisations operating in the same sector are determined and listed in order of their size and share of the market. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Individual organisations doing fundraising for themselves in the sector are listed, if possible, in order of their size and share of the market. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Provide a profile of a fundraising organisation in a sector. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The organisational structure of a typical fundraising organisation in a specific sector is explained using an organogram. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The roles and responsibilities of all employees including junior and senior management are determined and illustrated by way of a table. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A list is drawn up of the types of clients for which the organisation raises funds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The way in which the fundraising strategy for a particular client is drawn up, implemented and amended is described in a written report. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A list is drawn up of the type of donors for a particular client/fundraising venture. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Type of donor includes but is not limited to individual or corporate donor, socio-economic group, age, sex, income group.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The profile of a typical fundraising organisation operating in a particular sector is drawn up and explained by way of a presentation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Establish a database of donors who contribute to similar organisations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A list of corporate donors for a particular type of organisation or fundraising venture is drawn up showing frequency of donation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Frequency of donation includes, once-off donations, annually, half-yearly, quarterly, monthly
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A list of individual donors is drawn up for a specific organisation/fundraising venture indicating frequency of donation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A database of corporate and individual donors for a specific organisation/fundraising venture is compiled and entered onto a database for access for future fundraising ventures.

    Develop a fundraising strategy.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The elements that go to make up a fundraising strategy are identified and explained by way of examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The various fundraising activities that can be included in a fundraising strategy are identified and an indication given in writing of their advantages and disadvantages and for which type of fundraising venture each is most suitable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A fundraising strategy for an organisation is drawn up for a two year period.

    Assessment of this Unit Standard should be contextual and practical.
  • Assessors must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that represents the sector in which the learner is employed and which has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • The mechanisms and requirements for moderation should be applied in accordance with the requirements of the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
