PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Person credited with this standard will be capable of ensuring the effective and appropriate use of a dog that is able to react to the handlers command to search for and or apprehend an aggressive/violent suspect for the purpose of lawful arrest.

Benefit for society of this unit standard is that the person who completes this will contribute to safety in society.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Evaluate a crime scene.
  • Prepare the dog to search for and apprehend a suspect for the purpose of lawful arrest.
  • Utilise the dog to assist in apprehending and arresting an identified suspect.
  • Ensure that appropriate procedures are followed after the arrest.

  • A knowledge, comprehension and application of language and mathematical skills at NQF 3

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to persons competently handling dogs in the apprehension of violent suspects. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Evaluate a crime scene. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Handler must include:
  • Handler and dog operates as a cohesive unit.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Handler verifies the nature of the complaint. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Handler ascertains the conditions at the scene of crime. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Handler positively identifies the suspect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Handler ensures that the dog can carry out the task of searching for and/or apprehension of a fleeing or violent suspect. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare the dog to search for and apprehend a suspect for the purpose of lawful arrest. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Handler ensures that the dog is focused on the identified suspect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Handler identifies himself to the suspect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Handler cautions the suspect of his intent to release the dog, if the suspect fails to submit. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Utilise the dog to assist in apprehending and arresting an identified suspect. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Search must include:
    Day, night, in buildings, open areas, over obstacles, etc. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Handler gives the necessary commands in order for the dog to search for and/or apprehend an identified suspect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Handler maintains control of the dog during apprehension of the identified suspect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Handler ensures that the dog releases the suspect upon submission, by giving the appropriate command. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Handler must be in total control of the dog during the arrest of a suspect. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Ensure that appropriate procedures are followed after the arrest.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Handler ensures that the dog is placed under control in order to effect a physical search of the suspect, in terms of works place procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Suspect and dog are respectively inspected for injuries. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Medical attention is given to suspect and/or dog in the event of an injury sustained during the arrest. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Handler completes relevant documentation to record the incident according to workplace procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the POSLEC ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into, procedures.
