PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Persons credited with this unit standard will be capable of ensuring effective and appropriate application of a dog capable of reacting to the handler`s commands and protecting the handler to ensure effective protection of people and assets. A person credited with this unit standard is able to utilise the dog to deter crime and protect the handler.
Benefit for society of this unit standard is that the person who completes this will contribute to safety in society.

A person accredited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Prepare a trained service dog for guarding duties.
  • Utilize the trained service dog for guarding duties.
  • Conduct post-guarding responsibilities with regards to the trained service dog. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills, attitude and/or equivalent:
  • A knowledge, comprehension and application of language and mathematical skills at NQF level 01. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard is applicable to persons that as part of their duties are required to utilize a dog to deter crime and protect the handler. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare a trained service dog for guarding duties. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Equipment must include:
  • Leash, slip collar or collar.

    Serviceable must include:
  • no defects, in good working order

    Dogs must include:
  • Dogs with the attributes of working dogs with regards to temperament, maturity, height and size. Basic obedience on leash. Capable of protecting the handler under various threatening circumstances e.g. not gun or stick shy.

    Examination must include:
  • Physical examination of the dog by the handler, for irregularities with regards to the dogs well being.

  • Microchip, tattoo physical attributes or markings irregularities with regards to the dogs well being

    Hazards must include:
  • Anything that is likely to cause injury to the dog e.g. congested areas, traffic, chemicals, heat, obstacles, perimeters.

    2. Dog is examined to ensure identification, health and fitness.

    3. Handler considers signs of mental and physical stress with regards to the dog in the specific operational environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Operational environment is inspected for hazards that are detrimental to the guard dog's well being. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Information/briefing before commencement of duties confirms operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Handler ensures that the dog is capable of performing its duties. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Utilise the trained service dog for guarding duties. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Controls must include:
  • Dog reacts to handlers physical and/or verbal commands.

    Conditions must include:
  • Questioning and escorting of suspects, Patrolling in pedestrian free, controlled pedestrian and uncontrolled pedestrian areas.

    Welfare must include:
  • Watering points, shelter from adverse weather conditions, responding to injuries. Duration of shifts according to environmental conditions, condition of the dog, workplace procedures and regulations.

    Safety precautions must include:
  • Handler is to ensure that the dog does not injure innocent members of the public.

    Interpersonal skills must include:
  • Communication, professional attitude etc.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Handler controls the dog to perform the specific duties at all times and under various conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Handler attends to the welfare of the dog on site. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Safety precautions are adhered to in respect of authorised personnel and members of the public.

    4. Handler utilises the dog with regards to legal requirements and workplace procedures.

    5. The dog's indications are observed and reacted upon by the handler accordingly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Patrol techniques with dogs are conducted in a manner that maximizes the use of the dog's natural senses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    7. Appropriate interpersonal skills are applied to ensure effective customer relations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Conduct post-guarding responsibilities with regard to the trained service dog.

    1. The dog's welfare is catered for after completion of the shift.

    2. Reports are completed according to site-specific procedures.

    3. Handler reports on the ability of the dog to perform its duties correctly.

    4. Improvements to working procedures are recommended to the supervisor. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the POSLEC SETA ETQA/and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into by SAQA.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the POSLEC ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the POSLEC SETA ETQA/ and any other body with whom a MOU was entered into.
