PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will lead learners to be able to create a supportive environment where workers are aware about dread disease and how to support themselves and others in terms of accommodating limitations, dealing with emergencies, providing the necessary facilities and being proactive in providing ongoing support.

A manager in the context of this Unit Standard is the manager of a small business and first line managers of business units, team leaders and supervisors in medium and large organisations. The term business unit implies a small business, cost centre, section or department.

The Unit Standard was developed as a means of contributing to change in leadership focus and empowering managers to look at people issues. It is envisaged that this Unit Standard will be used as part of Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP).

The qualifying learner is capable of
  • Identifying dread diseases that compromise performance and productivity.
  • Indicating the minimum legal requirements related to dread disease in the workplace.
  • Identifying ways of providing an environment that is conducive to disclosure.
  • Investigating ways of accessing internal and external resources to minimise the effect of dread disease in a workplace.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard includes, but is not limited to, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart related diseases, epilepsy, HIV/AIDS, TB, occupation specific diseases, and emphysema.

    The risks that dread diseases pose to the workplace are identified with reference to the individual, team and organisation.

    Indicate the minimum legal requirements related to dread disease in a workplace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The rights of employees who have a dread disease are identified with reference to legislation and the right to reasonable accommodation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsibility of employers to people with a dread disease is indicated with reference to legislation and reasonable accommodation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of confidentiality and non-discrimination is explained with reference to liability associated with non-compliance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Policies and procedures relating to dread diseases are interpreted for a specific organisation.

    The organisation's policies and procedures are applied for three different scenarios.

    The relationship between an enabling environment and the South African Constitution is explained with reference to principles of good practice.

    Reasons why people label groups are explored with reference to upbringing, culture, exposure and general background.

    Investigate ways of accessing internal and external resources.

    The needs of people with dread diseases are identified in order to co-ordinate referrals within the organisation's mandate.

    Workplace protocols regarding emergency responses are explained and an indication is given of own role in an emergency situation.
