PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation and their client's hand for the use of an electric drill file during a nail enhancement service.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Preparing the client, workstation and performing a natural prepping treatment with an electric drill.
  • Performing maintenance filing, removal of cracks, lifted products and cuticle work after product application with an electric drill.
  • Performing a French back fill service with an electrical drill. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical and communication studies at NQF Level 3 and against unit standards: Perform a manicure and Perform a pedicure at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Broad knowledge of the different electric drilling equipment.
  • An in depth knowledge of the equipment and bits.
  • An in depth knowledge of how to clean, disinfect and maintain the equipment.
  • In depth knowledge of the dangers, possible causes of doing harm or damage to a client.
  • Hygienic procedures are to be followed: personal cleanliness, sanitation of tools and work area.
  • Appropriate tools for an electric drill service include an electric file, and appropriate bits.

    The workstation and client is prepared for an electric drill service with the applicable tools, products, equipment and materials and meets the required levels of hygiene according to organisational requirements.

    The client's nails and skin are assessed and recommendations are captured on client record card. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Prepping of natural nail for artificial service is performed with electric drill according to manufacturers and organisational recommendations.

    The electric drill and equipment's cleaned and disinfected according manufacturers' recommendation.

    The client's nails were not harmed or damaged during said treatment.

    Product is reapplied according to clients needs, the electric drill is used to level the product at the cuticles using the correct drill bits according to manufacturers' and organisational recommendations.

    The electric drill and equipment's are cleaned and disinfected according manufacturers recommendations.

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
