PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe semi permanent hair colour; describe preparation required for application of semi permanent hair colour; describe that application of semi permanent hair colour; and describe follow up actions for semi permanent hair colour application.

The qualifying learner is capable of:

Preparing the client and work station for relevant service to be performed.

Preparing for application of semi-permanent hair colour.

Applying semi-permanent hair colour.

Completing semi-permanent hair colour application.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Learners assessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

Professional manner is assessed according to aspects such as ethical standards, commitment to service, personal and interpersonal skills, body language, tone of voice, posture and personal appearance.

Safety precautions that must be demonstrated for assessment includes:

Proof that a patch test was performed prior to a colouring service;

Protection of client's clothes and face;

Testing of water temperature to ensure client comfort;

Control of water pressure;

Protection of client's head against banging or scratching;

Using clean towels and tools;

Sharp instruments are handled with care;

Manufacturer's instructions are followed;

Barrier products are applied around hairline;

Hands are protected by wearing gloves;

Lids on chemicals are replaced immediately after use;

Jewelry is removed before application of chemicals;

Chemicals are not mixed in metal containers;

Maximum processing time is not exceeded.

Discuss colour with reference to primary, secondary and tertiary colours;

State and explain the laws of colour with reference to:
- The colour star or colour wheel;
- Creating colours from primary and secondary colours;
- Neutralisation of colours;
- Complementary colours;
- Intensification of colours.

To explain natural hair pigmentation with reference to:

Formation of natural pigments;

The pigments naturally occurring in melanin;
