PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation for a paraffin foot, hand treatment, and prepare their client for the treatment. Learners are also able to perform paraffin hand and foot treatment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the workstation for a paraffin foot and hand treatment according to organisational procedures
  • Preparing the client for a paraffin foot and hand treatment
  • Performing a paraffin hand treatment
  • Performing a paraffin foot treatment

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare the workstation for a paraffin hand/foot treatment according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The workstation is prepared with the applicable tools, products and materials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The record keeping documents are selected and made available in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety and hygienic practices are followed and adhered to throughout the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The appropriate paraffin wax heater is selected and replenished and temperature control is set. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare the client for a paraffin hand/foot treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The client is received and consulted with in a professional manner according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The skin and nails are assessed and treatment to be performed is determined according to the clients needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The client is suitably prepared for a paraffin treatment according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The nail and surrounding skin is cleansed with appropriate products and tools and left free of any nail varnish. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The hands/feet are soaked in a sanitising solution to meet the treatment plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The hands, lower arms/lower legs, feet are exfoliated and dried according to organisational requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform a paraffin hand treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A relaxing massage is conducted in a continuous manner on the hands and forearms with an appropriate medium utilising effleurage, petrissage and/or friction movements to suit the client's needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The temperature of the wax is tested and a safe comfortable working temperature is maintained and the wax layers are applied suitably, covered and allowed to set. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The wax is peeled off and product residue is removed with appropriate products and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The client is advised of homecare treatment and products to maintain service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The follow up appointment is secured and the client record card is completed in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Sales opportunities are identified throughout the treatment and products recommended that are suitable with the clients needs.
