PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation and their clients' hand for the treatment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the workstation for a manicure according to organisational requirements
  • Preparing client for manicure treatment
  • Managing and perform a manicure
  • Managing and performing buffing on nails
  • Managing and performing the application of nail varnish
  • Managing and performing a French manicure (two tone manicure) 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The client should be seated or reclined.
  • Hygienic procedures are to be followed: Personal cleanliness, sanitation of tools and work area.
  • Appropriate tools for a pedicure could include nail scissors, nail clippers cuticle nippers, orange stick, emery boards, hoof sticks, buffers, foot files and foot rasp.

    Prepare the workstation for a manicure according to organisational requirements.

    The service to be performed is determined verbally by questioning the client.

    The workstation for a manicure is prepared with the applicable tools, products and materials.

    The record keeping documents are selected and made available for completion according to organisational requirements.

    The workstation meets the required levels of hygiene according to organisational requirements.

    The client's nails and skin are assessed and recommendations are captured on client record card.

    The nails and surrounding skin are cleansed and made free of any varnish with appropriate products and tools.

    The natural nail is shaped according to client's preferences using appropriate tools.

    The hands are soaked in a sanitising solution according to organisational requirements.

    Manage and perform a manicure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The appropriate exfolliant is selected and applied according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The cuticles are softened and pushed back with minimum discomfort to the client using appropriate products and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A relaxing massage is conducted in a continuous manner on the hands and forearms with an appropriate medium utilizing effleurage, petrissage and / or friction movements to suit the client's needs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Record card is completed and client advised on homecare treatments, retail products and time schedule for follow up appointment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safety and hygienic practices are followed and adhered to throughout the process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Manage and perform a temporary nail repair and buffing on nails.

    Prepare the cuticles and nails according to manufacturer's recommendation according to organisational procedures.

    The nail plate is repaired with mending tissue and saturated with mending liquid. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The nail is buffed with appropriate products and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The nail plate is buffed to optimum level without over buffing.

    Manage and perform the application of nail varnish.
