PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners working within the medical field who have collected or received human tissue samples and are required to competently use point of care (POC) biomedical instrumentation and/or rapid test kits for the testing of these samples.

The knowledge and skills gained will enable the qualifying learner to fulfil a more meaningful role in the medical field, thus enhancing health care delivery and economic transformation.

Knowledge and skills gained through competency in this unit standard will be beneficial for progression to related occupations in the medical field.

Qualifying learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Understand the basic principle of operation of the Point of Care (POC) instrumentation/rapid test kits
  • Perform routine maintenance on POC instrumentation systems and quality control on both POC instrumentation systems and rapid test kits and TB stain
  • Test samples using POC instrumentation systems/rapid test kits or TB microscopy procedure
  • Report and document the results obtained

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the principle of operation of the POC instruments/rapid test kits. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    POC instruments include but are not limited to blood gas analyzers, electrolyte analyzers, haemaglobinometers, glucometers and whole blood coagulation POC systems

    Rapid test kits include, but not limited to: HIV, hepatitis, malaria, syphilis, antistreptolysin O titre, blood grouping, urine dipsticks, pregnancy test, Troponin T rapid test and haemoglobin

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The POC instrument/rapid test kit for the specified test is correctly identified and selected 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The knowledge of basic principles of operation of the relevant instrument/kit is correctly demonstrated orally or in writing 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The readiness of the instrument/kit for use is determined as per manufacturer's instructions and prescribed protocol 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Limitations of the instrument/kit are explained orally or in writing as per manufacturer's instructions and prescribed protocol 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform routine maintenance and/or quality control.

    Routine maintenance of POC instrument is correctly performed according to the manufacturer's requirements and prescribed protocol

    Routine POC instrument maintenance and associated problems are documented and reported according the prescribed protocol

    The importance of quality control relevant to the instrument/kit being used is demonstrated orally or in writing

    Quality controls are run, documented and associated problems are reported according to the manufacturer's requirements and the prescribed protocol
