PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard as a chosen elective within the Heritage Practice certificate will have the competency to develop a tourism product/service that is environmentally sustainable, sensitive to local community heritage needs and optimally viable in the context.

This unit standard also imparts the skills and knowledge required to manage this product as a strategic development within tourism and hospitality enterprises.

The term, product development, as utilised within this unit, refers both to the monitoring and development of existing facilities/services/products as well as to the creation of new facilities/services/products for heritage tourism purposes. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that the learner attempting this unit standard will show competence in communication and numeracy equivalent to NQF level3. In addition, learners must also have successfully completed the unit standards:
  • Instil in myself a personal marketing culture.
  • Analyse and synthesise a variety of texts related to heritage production and consumption.
  • Provide research assistance.
  • Develop a business plan for a small business.

This unit standard is applicable across a range of tourism and hospitality industry sectors. As a result, this unit standard may be applied in different workplaces, sectors and circumstances.

    Input from both internal colleagues as well as external stakeholders is evaluated and incorporated in to the product identification process.

    The requirements for different customers with special needs are evaluated in the identification process.

    The significance and value of the identified product is clearly communicated to all relevant stakeholders.
