PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner credited with this unit standard will have an overview of the processes required to facilitate community participation in preserving heritage resources. This will entail an understanding of the central issues and methods of the protection and management of cultural landscapes in consultation with the community.

The learner will also be able to provide assistance with the set up and presentation of an activity or event related to heritage conservation, promotion, communication and education. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
NQF level 3 or equivalent or prior learning in the human and physical environment. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
A broad range of consultative methods and approaches to developing and identifying community participation is desired. Tools may include the more conventional approaches including surveys, interviews etc through to interventions which may include the plastic or performing arts approaches. Tools and approach need to be determined by the community in question.

Strategies for the management of heritage sites include:
  • Management of an historical site or,
  • Management of a national monument or,
  • Management of a conservation area or,
  • Management of a registered site or,
  • Conservation of an archaeological site or,
  • Management of a rock art site or,
  • Management of a grave of a victim of conflict.

    Public activities and events may include:
  • Special occasions and festivals
  • Holiday or weekend activities
  • Performance - theatre, film, music, craft/art demonstrations, workshops
  • Scientific experiments
  • Excavations, field trips, site visits
  • Open days
  • Ceremonies

    These may take place on site or elsewhere and may require:
