PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to
  • Define, calculate and illustrate bending moments, shear forces and reactions for statically indeterminate beams with the use of influence lines and moment distribution techniques.
  • Analyse and design pin jointed frames and trusses using graphical methods to establish internal member forces.
  • Analyse and design pin jointed frames and trusses using "method of sections" techniques to establish internal member forces.
  • Prepare data for computer analysis of two dimensional steel portal frame structures.
  • Prepare data for computer analysis of simple three dimensional steel grids and space frames
