PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Explaining the electron theory
  • Explain magnetic theory
  • Explain the basic fundamentals of power generation and distribution
  • Apply OHM's law to solve problems
  • Configure series, parallel and series-parallel resistive circuits

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment.

    3. The effect of an external power source on the electrons in a conductor is explained with reference to electron theory.

    4. The principles of basic electrical circuits are explained in terms of a power source and a load.

    5. The basic principles of voltage and current flow in an electrical circuit are explained in terms of electron theory.

    1. Permanent magnet concept is explained in terms of the molecular structure of materials.

    2. All five characteristics of magnetic lines of flux are explained in terms of magnetic theory.

    3. The relationship between magnetic field and current flow is explained in terms of movement, field strength and conductor length within the magnetic field.

    4. The electromagnet concept is explained in terms of magnetic lines of flux around a current carrying conductor and cores.

    1. The production of electricity is explained with reference to pressure, heat, light, friction, magnetism and chemical.

    2. The conversion of resources into usable energy is explained with reference to coal, gas, nuclear, water, wind and solar. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Generation of DC is explained in terms of a single loop in a magnetic field. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Generation of single phase AC is explained in terms of a single loop in a magnetic field.

    1. Electrical units and symbols are identified and applied in accordance with SI Units.

    2. The relationship between voltage, current and resistance is explained and applied in terms of Ohm's law.

    3. Factors influencing resistance is explained in terms of mateiral type, length, diameter and temperature.

    4. Power consumed by a simple resistive electrical circuit is calculated in terms of DC theory.

    3. Resistance, voltage, current and power variances are interpreted and calculated in parallel circuits according to instructions.

    4. Resistance, voltage, current and power variances are interpreted and calculated in series-parallel circuits according to instructions.

    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
