PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the elective category of the NQF Level 4 National Certificate in Footwear technology. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to finish footwear using a range of advanced machines and equipment through finishing and dressing footwear, setting and adjusting a range of machines, coaching fellow employees as well as organising the workflow of processes. Learners involved in finishing and dressing will use this standard. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained the NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Footwear processes. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Applicable to welted and other constructions:
Machines used for finishing will include:
  • Loose nailer.
  • Rough rounder.
  • Stitching.
  • Heel scourer.
  • Heel attacher.
  • Heel pairer.
  • Edge trimmer.
  • Ploughing.
  • Channel opener.
  • Channel closer.
  • Leveller.
  • Edge setter.
  • Seat wheeler.
  • Heel padder.
  • Bottom scourer.
  • Bunker.
  • Nibbler.
    Setting and adjusting will apply to all machines used to finish footwear.

    Finishing and dressing footwear using machinery and equipment.

    1. Advanced machinery and equipment specifications are identified and understood applying manufacturers specifications.

    2. Appropriate selection of machine operations is demonstrated in finishing a shoe in compliance with standard operating procedures.

    Setting and adjusting a range of finishing machines.

    1. Machines and equipment specifications relevant to finishing processes are correctly identified and understood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Different equipment for specific product types is identified in accordance with enterprise standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Coaching others to perform tasks relating to finishing and dressing of footwear uppers and bottoms.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The principles of effective coaching are understood and effectively implemented applying specified coaching techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The ability to coach a fellow employee to perform a new skill is demonstrated on any one selected machine according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Organising the workflow of a process to finish footwear.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. A workflow of processes is organised where relevant processes pertaining to finishing processes is considered applying industry norms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Different consumables are identified according to specific product types in accordance with enterprise standard operating procedures.

    The relevant Sector Education and Training Authority or Education and Training Quality Assurance Body will carry our accreditation of learning against this standard. Assessment will be conducted by registered assessors.

  • Coaching techniques, providing feedback and measuring a persons application of a new skill.
  • Operating procedures of a range of machines used to finish footwear.
