PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the elective category of the NQF Level 4 National Certificate in Footwear technology. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to join cut components to produce uppers using a range of advanced machines and equipment through joining cut components, coaching fellow employees, setting and adjusting machines and equipment as well as organising the workflow of processes. Learners involved in closing will use this standard. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained the NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Footwear processes. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Machines used to join materials to produce closed uppers will include:
  • Strobel.
  • Machine stitching moccasins.
  • Machine lacing moccasins.
    Setting and adjusting will apply to all machines used to produce closed uppers.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Joining cut components using a range of machinery and equipment to produce closed uppers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Advanced machinery and equipment specifications are identified and understood applying manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The ability to select the appropriate and operate safely a range of machines required to close 1 pair of uppers with a minimum of 8 pieces per pair (ex linings) according to a work instruction provided in compliance with standard operating procedures is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Coaching others to perform tasks relating to the joining of cut components to produce closed uppers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The principles of effective coaching are understood and effectively implemented applying specified coaching techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The ability to coach a fellow employee to perform a new task on any one selected machine is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Setting and adjusting a range of machines and equipment.

    1. Machines and equipment specifications relevant to bottom stock manufacture are correctly identified and understood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The ability to safely set up, check and adjust on machinery is demonstrated in compliance with manufacturers specifications and standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Organising the workflow of a process to join cut components to produce closed uppers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. A workflow of processes is organised where relevant processes pertaining to the manufacture of closed uppers is considered applying industry norms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The ability to select the appropriate consumables to be used in the footwear closing processes is demonstrated in compliance with standard operating procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The relevant Sector Education and Training Authority or Education and Training Quality Assurance Body will carry our accreditation of learning against this standard. Assessment will be conducted by registered assessors.

  • Coaching techniques, providing feedback and measuring a persons application of a new skill.
  • Operating procedures of an advanced range of machines used to produce closed uppers
  • The closing process as it relates to the complete process of manufacturing a range of footwear products.
