PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the core category of the NQF Level 4 National Certificate in Footwear technology. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to improve on health, safety and environmental issues in footwear processes through storing goods, equipment and tools, demarcating designated working areas, inspecting safety equipment as well as assessing environmental issues. Learners involved in any elective area will use this standard. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained the NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Footwear processes. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The standard applies to all processes within clicking, closing, making, bottoms, finishing and dressing, and pattern cutting and design. 

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Storing goods, equipment, tools etc ensuring good housekeeping practices.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
1. Goods, equipment and tools are stored neatly after use applying industry specifications to avoid obstruction. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
2. Storage procedures are met through plant walk about where product expiry dates are recorded in compliance with supplier and enterprise specifications. 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
Demarcating designated areas to layout in terms of regulations.

1. Designated working areas within the footwear plant are appropriately demarcated according to laid down safety legislation.

Inspecting safety equipment to keep in working condition.

1. Safety equipment is inspected thoroughly and timeously in accordance with manufacturers specifications and safety legislation to avoid accidents.

2. Inspection reports, highlight needs and recommendations are produced and recorded where appropriate action is taken regarding cost saving in compliance with standard operating procedures. 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
Assessing environmental issues to protect self, business and community.

1. Environmental issues are researched and assessed in conjunction with self, business and community applying standard operating procedures.

2. An environmental impact assessment of a plant and surroundings is described in compliance with national municipal regulations and standard operating procedures.
