In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
To recognise the competence of learners who are able to operate a non-continuous furnace as used in some molten glass production operations.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Operate components of the furnace and ancillary equipment or machinery.
  • Commission and establish normal operating conditions from a cold furnace.
  • Maintain normal operating conditions and address abnormal or emergency conditions in a furnace.
  • Shut down a furnace.

A non-continuous furnace comprises of furnace, heating system (electric and or gas), feed system (manual conveyors and vibratory), tapping system (that maybe continuous or batch and may require titling or lifting the furnace).
Safety and dust handling facilities are considered to be part of the whole furnace.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence regarding:
  • Health, safety, environmental and quality issues and technology relevant to processing (chemical) materials.
  • Operating an integrated batch mixing plant.
  • Operating equipment.
Where learners do not have the relevant expertise, appropriate adjustments must be made to the learning programme.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Establishment of normal conditions is typically required after an abnormal situation such as a sustained energy supply failure or down stream shutdown has occurred.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Operate components of the furnace and the ancillary equipment or machinery.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Describe components of the furnace with reference to their function, method of operation and operating instructions.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Components include equipment, machinery, and control system(s) that are indefinable as separate parts or units with in the furnace `system`. (Typical examples of components are burners & fuel supply systems, electrodes, feeder, dust extraction/hoods and process control system).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Conduct pre start-up checks according to instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Start and operate components in accordance with specified sequences and instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
4.Check and maintain components in accordance with process operating requirements and instructions.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Remedial action includes shut down and use of standby unit, repair or call-out of designated person.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    5. Take remedial action in accordance with site specific instructions when a component does not operate in accordance with requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Components include heating, feeding, tapping, control equipment and dust control units.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Commission/heat and maintain normal operating conditions in a furnace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Explain the reasons for following instructions with reference to minimizing damage to the furnace, relevant technology and efficient production.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Carry out pre-commissioning checks and start components/units of equipment in accordance with instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Heat furnace in accordance with instructions avoiding damage to refractory lining.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. Establish normal operating conditions in accordance with acceptable practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
    5. Interpret and understand operating/production instructions ensuring any specific operating criteria for the operating period/shift is adhered to.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
    6. Monitor and record what must be produced and process operation is in accordance with instructions

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
    7. Identify trends, abnormal conditions, and deviations from normal values and make appropriate adjustments to the process variables to keep process operation in accordance with instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8
    8. Carry out feeding and tapping in accordance with instructions and adhere to all safety, and environmental and quality assurance practices in accordance with site specific requirements.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Address abnormal or emergency conditions in a furnace and shut down a furnace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Identify and report abnormal, emergency, hazardous conditions and other non-routine conditions and take actions within time frames that are accepted best practice.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Abnormal conditions are situations where normal process operation cannot continue for reasons that cannot be corrected by normal adjustment of process variables, hazardous conditions are situations, which place people, environment, and or equipment at risk.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Safety and environmental requirements are maintained conditions addressing abnormal or emergency conditions and conditions normal operating conditions are re-established.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Actions may include addressing the problem personally, instructing subordinate to address problem or calling for expert help such as an artisan, manager or other technical expert. Best practice is the action or activity accepted by the relevant industry and experts as appropriate under given or equivalent circumstances.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Pre-shutdown activities are conducted on the furnace and ancillary equipment according to instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. Communicate information concerning shut down to appropriate people conditions and check and carryout routine servicing/maintained conditions in accordance with instructions and best practice.
