PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for installing ventilation brattices and walls or curtaining in an underground workplace.

People credited with this unit standard are able to
  • describe the specified requirements regarding the installation of ventilation controls according to a specific layout;
  • prepare to install ventilation controls;
  • install ventilation controls; and
  • perform post installation activities. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • The ability to read and write at ABET level 3 or equivalent, will facilitate better understanding and proficiency in this unit standard.
  • Determine velocity of air in a workplace by means of the tape method and take appropriate action 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following applies to the entire unit standard:
    Range: Underground workplace ventilation controls must include brattice and walls or brattice and curtaining.
    The workplace refers to any working place that requires ventilation controls to adequately ventilate it.

    1. The explanation of the various ventilation control systems within an underground workplace is consistent with specified requirements.

    2. The explanation regarding the velocity within an underground workplace is consistent with specified requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The personal protective equipment required is available, operational, fit for purpose and used in accordance with specified requirements. The importance of examining and using the equipment is explained in terms of the consequences to health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The location where installation is to take place is examined and prepared. Hazards and risks pertaining to health and safety are dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. The importance of examining the workplace and dealing with hazards and risks are explained in terms of the possible consequences to health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The tools and equipment are examined and defects are dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. The importance of examining of the tools and equipment is explained in terms of the consequences to health and safety.

    4. The preparatory work is performed in a manner so as to foster teamwork and avoid conflict.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The location where the ventilation controls are to be installed is verified in accordance with specified requirements. The importance of verifying the correct location of the installation is explained in terms of the consequences to health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The immediate vicinity is continuously assessed and hazards and risks pertaining to health and safety are dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. The importance of dealing with hazards and risks is explained in terms of the consequences to health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The ventilation controls are installed in accordance with specified requirements. The importance of complying with the above is explained in terms of the consequences to health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The ventilation controls are installed in a manner that fosters teamwork and avoids conflict. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Tools and equipment are used in accordance with specified requirements and without injury to self and others.

    1. The installation is evaluated and compared to specified requirements.

    2. The work site is cleared in accordance with mine good housekeeping requirements.

    3. The tools are cleaned and stored in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Equipment that is defective or broken is dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. The importance of dealing with this defective or broken equipment is explained in terms of the consequences to health and safety. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge, candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes to the standards described in the assessment criteria. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate`s performance.   • UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember, we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence - of the prescribed type and quality as specified in this unit standard - that the candidate is able to achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well-documented principles of assessment, namely appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
