PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to support the facilitation learning in a community or group event focusing on one particular area of specialization. This learner will perform the tasks under supervision.

A learner will also be able to contribute to the Training for Transformation [TFT], Participatory Action Research Programmes; local South African development programmes and various capacity building programmes. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
A learner studying towards this unit standard is assumed to have the ability to communicate orally and in writing in their language of choice as well as that of the community i.e. functional literacy at NQF Level 1.

A learner is also assumed to be familiar with the specialisation of the learning area and have completed the following unit standard:

Understand the foundations of development practice at NQF Level 1. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Development practice projects shall include community or group-learning events that address selected and identified problems.
  • The learner will assist with the facilitation of a selected community or group-learning event in one specialised field or learning area.
  • Methods of facilitation should be appropriate to the field of specialisation.
  • The single learning event could be a one-to-one event, a small group workshop or a workshop for up to 20 people.
  • Learning materials and learning aids may include flip chart notes, posters, pamphlets, diagrams, newspaper cuttings, objects etc.
  • A supervisor or mentor will facilitate the discussions.
  • The report of the supervisor will assess the learner`s familiarity with basic principles of materials development such as readability.

    Prepare and set up a learning environment for a development practice project.

    1. The learning environment is set up in accordance with a set of instructions regarding layout and arrangements.

    2. All relevant information for display is discussed and demonstrated.

    Key examples include agendas, outcomes and display-material.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Room arrangement for the plenary, as well as groups, is organised and described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Facilitate relevant learning with appropriate learning support materials. 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    The term Relevant Learning is used in this Specific Outcome to allow a learner to select and use the appropriate learning support material and assistance to senior development practitioner.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Appropriate support learning materials and aids are selected in accordance with a set of clear instructions, context and outcome of the learning programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Selected learning support materials are adapted to accommodate the needs of participants in a project.

    3. The general principles of adapting materials are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. All relevant learning support materials are displayed and appropriately distributed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Facilitate relevant learning in a specialised field.

    The term Relevant Learning is used in this Specific Outcome to allow a learner to use their facilitation skills to support and assist a senior development practitioner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Knowledge of the field of specialisation is explained and described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A learner has a choice of at least one specialised field of knowledge for assessment purposes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Simple facilitation skills and methods are demonstrated through discussion and debate. This should include conditions that may change and require active engagement and involvement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The support function to facilitate relevant learning is evaluated in accordance with a set of procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Each unit standard provides more specific guidance regarding moderation of the specific outcomes. Accredited providers may establish their own systems and procedures in line with the requirements of the relevant ETQA.

    An external moderator may moderate the results of learners. External moderators should provide reports not only on the fairness and consistency of assessment, but also on the validity of the assessment design in terms of the specified outcomes.

    A development practitioner accredited with this unit standard should be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of:
  • Characteristics of adults and youths as learners

    Contributing to the full personal development of each learner and the social and economic development of the society at large, by making an individual aware of the underlying intention of any programme by:

    The unit standard supports the above critical cross-field outcomes fully. The unit standard is about using, preparing and facilitating information to others and is therefore vital to contributing to the full personal development of each learner, and the social and economic development of the society at large. 

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Anyone assessing learners against this unit standard could be employed as a development practitioner in the same provider institution with at least a level 4 Qualification and work with a registered assessor in development practice with the relevant ETQA.

    Registered Assessors must have a level 5 qualification in development practice and prior or concurrent experience as a development practitioner.
