PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is aimed at people who work in or intend to work in a stores and/or receiving function where hazardous materials are handled. People working in a manufacturing or product processing environment will find this unit standard especially useful.

Those learners who acquire the outcomes of this standard will know about and be able to receive and store chemicals safely.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Receive hazardous chemicals for production against planned orders.
  • Store hazardous chemicals for production requirements.
  • Supply up to date information on chemicals available for production. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against numeracy and literacy at ABET Level 3 or equivalent. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Receive hazardous chemicals for production against planned orders. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Integrity of packaging is checked, and the condition of chemicals is matched against specifications. Where faults or spillages are identified, action is taken to quarantine and/or return chemicals in line with site policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Quantities received are accurately matched to the documented requirements, and any deviances noted and reported as per laid down procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Correct clothing is worn in a manner that protects personnel and products, and complies with organizational policy and legislation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Correct clothing: gloves, face masks, goggles, overalls, sleeve protectors, safety boots/shoes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Chemicals are handled in a safe and in an environmentally friendly manner, using the designated handling of equipment and techniques. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Correct handling equipment: pipes and pipe fittings, tanks, pumps, meters, hoses, containers, conveyors and lifting apparatus.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Safety equipment and accessories ready and available during the period of chemical handling, and their uses explained in the event of fire, spillages and leakages. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Hazards associated with each chemical category are discussed, and the appropriate treatments described for cases of accidental human contact.

    Store hazardous chemicals for production requirements.

    1. Storage of chemicals is in line with safety legislation and standard operating procedures, and storage space used in accordance with Company stock holding policies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Stored chemicals are clearly labeled and have accurate date coding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. All documentation relating to storage is accurate and complete, in line with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Incorrect chemical storage is discussed with reference to impact on housekeeping, downtime, safety and quality are discussed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Supply up to date information on chemicals available for production.

    1. Stock data entered in the information system is checked for correctness by comparing records with a count of actual materials on hand.

    2. Records, forms and/or checklists are stored so that they are secure and easily accessible to authorized users, in line with Company policy, procedures and legislation.

    3. Updated stock information is communicated to the relevant personnel within the agreed time period to promote efficient operations and good working relations.
