    Demonstrate knowledge of chemicals used in a working environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The properties of chemicals used in the plant are listed and their reactions described with regard to their contribution to the production process. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Chemicals: bulk or packaged liquids, solids, powders, resins and/or gases: chlorine-based, caustics, sanitizers, detergents and/or gas, and/or solvents.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The importance of protecting self, equipment, product and environment is explained, and the consequences of negligent on-site handling discussed in terms of legislation and Company safety policies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The consequences of misuse and spillage of hazardous chemicals in the work place and society at large are explained with reference to Company culture, people's health, the environment and consumer reactions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Alternative actions that could be taken to rectify abnormal conditions, such as spillages, are discussed with reference to the types of chemicals being used.

    1. Correct clothing is worn in a manner that protects personnel and product and complies with organizational policy and legislation.

    5. Personnel affected by preparation of chemicals are notified within a timeframe that promotes workplace and team safety.

    6. Knowledge of first aid and safety procedures for each chemical being handled are demonstrated prior to the commencement of chemical handling.

    1. Chemicals are handled in a manner that maximizes operator and product safety in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    3. Wastage is kept to a minimum and spillages are removed using the appropriate method for the chemical in question, with due regard to storm water and effluent systems.

    1. Used equipment and materials are cleaned, disposed of or stored so that they do not pose a threat to the safety of personnel, plant or environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The consequences of incorrect materials disposal are explained with reference to the impact on people, plant and environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The handling process carried out is reviewed against the knowledge of chemical handling in order to identify discrepancies between theory and practice.

    4. The work area is cleaned and restored to its pre-handling state, as per workplace requirements.

    5. The status of chemical handling is reported to appropriate personnel and is in the required format.

    The Educational Training Quality Assurance Body (ETQA), for the Chemical Industry in consultation with GEN/FETQA will accredit providers offering learning towards this standard and will register assessors. They will also appoint the internal and external moderators.
