PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who are responsible for determining conductance of liquids.
A person credited with this unit standard is able to
  • Demonstrate knowledge relating to conductance determinations; and
  • Determine the conductance of a liquid. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Sciences, Communications and Mathematics at ABET Level 4
  • Performance of measurements using volumetric equipment
  • Laboratory health, safety, and environmental standards
  • Proficiency at preparing sample solutions in liquid form for instrumental analysis
  • Computer literacy

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrating knowledge relating to conductance determinations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. That hazards and risks pertaining to conductivity determinations are identified and explained with reference to team health and safety and environmental impact, and that the appropriate preventative measures are described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Hazards and risks must include:
  • Hazardous sample material;
  • Waste disposal; and
  • Hazardous chemicals
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. That the basic principle of conductance is explained with reference to the dissolved solid concentration in the liquid. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The basic principle must include:
  • Unit of measurement;
  • Definition of conductivity; and
  • Effects of temperature.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. That the principal components of the equipment are identified and their primary functions are described in accordance with specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principal components must include:
  • Electrodes;
  • Display system;
  • Stirring device; and
  • Temperature probe.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. That the impact of sample preservation and storage is explained with reference to maintaining sample integrity and obtaining meaningful results.

    5. That the purpose of the determination is explained in terms of customer requirements.

    6. That common problems are explained in terms of their effect on the process, and that appropriate preventative or corrective actions are described in accordance with specified requirements.

  • Faulty electrodes;
  • Contamination;
  • Instrumentation faults;
  • Incorrect calibration; and
  • Temperature fluctuations.

    7. That the consequences of non-compliance with specified requirements are explained with respect to personal and team health and safety, impact on the environment, production, costs and lost time.

    1. That the required personal protective equipment is available, operational, fit for the purpose and used in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. That the calibration standards are verified and are appropriate with respect to the conductivity range for the particular sample solutions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. That the conductivity instrument is calibrated in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. That the samples are identified and verified, and the conductance is measured in accordance with specified requirements and quality control procedures.

    5. That data are recorded and results reported in accordance with specified requirements within agreed turnaround times.

    6. That any problems encountered are identified and rectified in accordance with specified requirements.

    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.

    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
