PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this standard must be able to interpret job instructions, have knowledge about various types of materials, prepare for and mark off engineering shapes including G clamp and a pipe T piece from drawings or using templates and perform quality checks. This work is performed under supervision.

Learners will be able to:
  • Plan and prepare materials and equipment for marking off and use equipment to draw shapes.
  • Perform marking off procedures. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at NQF Level 1.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.
  • Unit Standard: Read and interpret engineering drawings at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard involves the marking off of basic engineering shapes. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and prepare materials and equipment for marking off and use equipment to draw shapes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Job instructions are interpreted to ensure that materials and marking off equipment are made ready. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment and materials for the task are selected, marked off and described in terms of their functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Materials include aluminium, copper, plastics, metals, paper.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment and materials of a defective nature are removed or replaced, and reported to relevant personnel in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Geometric shapes are drawn using drawing instruments. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Shapes include regular pentagon, hexagon, gasket, bracket.
  • Instruments include but are not limited to scriber, punches, dividers, callipers, trammel, surface plates, Vee blocks, steel square, engineer's square, sliding bevel, combination set.

    Perform marking off procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment, templates and materials are checked and laid out before marking off procedure to limit wastage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Templates are selected and used in the marking-off procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Marking off is complete as per job instructions and acceptable standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Marking off includes but is not limited to marking off a G clamp on mild steel, a pipe T-piece.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Quality checks are performed to ensure that work meets production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Marking off equipment is cared for and stored as per standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Work is performed under supervision and with due regard for safety of self and others.
