PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to understand the importance of balance and use of the jockey seat. They will be able to demonstrate the skills required to ride in a jockey seat.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing the jockey seat.
  • Demonstrating riding in a jockey seat.
  • Demonstrating balance when riding race horses. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Unit Standard: Perform horse riding proficiency skills on a trained horse at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the jockey seat. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of riding in a jockey seat is explained with reference to riding style and comfort. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The positions of the head and torso are described in accordance with international standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The positions refer to the rider/jockey.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The positions of the upper limbs are described in accordance with international standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The positions of the lower limbs are described in accordance with international standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The difference between the jockey seat and other riding disciplines are explained in relation to the required riding style for speed. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Other disciplines may include but are not limited to: show jumping and dressage.

    Demonstrate riding in a jockey seat. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The head and torso are positioned and maintained throughout the ride according to international standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The upper limbs are positioned and maintained throughout the ride according to international standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The lower limbs are positioned and maintained throughout the ride according to international standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate balance when riding horses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The importance of being in balance with a race horse when riding is described in terms of international riding rules and obtaining maximum speed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A race horse is ridden without reins at a trot on the lunge. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A race horse is ridden with feet out of the stirrups while being lunged. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A race horse is ridden through the bending poles at pace. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Pace is a trot and slow canter, bending poles must be a maximum of eight meters apart and a minimum of four bending poles.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
