PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner will be able to administer the Van Schoor system of train control by planning rail movement, operating Van Schoor instruments and completing warning advices (where applicable) and will be able to conform to POSMOR and related train working rules in a specific railway environment in order to contribute to safe movement on rail.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Planning rail movement.
  • Making rail movement arrangements.
  • Authorising rail movement.
  • Communicating and recording train movement according to train working rules.
  • Operating the Van Schoor instruments.

    Rail movement information is gathered in terms of immediate operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Information includes but is not limited to type of train, crossing of trains, passing of trains, timetables of commuter and freight trains.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Rail movement running times are calculated in terms of the gathered information. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Rail movements are planned according to operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Movements include but are not limited to run through, crossing, shunting and passing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tablets, forms and warning advices are completed according to information on exchanged messages and train crossings arrangements diagrams.

    Forms include but are not limited to combined message and proceeding order and manuscript order.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Completed forms and warning advices are compared with messages and train crossings arrangements diagrams for correctness.

    Tablets, forms and warning advices are handed over to train personnel.

    Train movements are updated in the train register in accordance with organisational procedures.

    Train arrivals/departures are communicated to neighbouring stations in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Confirmation of train's arrival at unattended place is recorded in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Train arrivals at and departures from unattended places are communicated to neighbouring stations in accordance with organisational procedures.

    Operate the Van Schoor instruments.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The Van Schoor tokens are replaced or cancelled according to the relevant train working rules.

    The Van Schoor tokens are obtained according to the relevant train working rules.

    The Van Schoor tokens are handed over to the train driver according to the relevant train working rules.

    Procedures for operating under a degraded mode are explained according to train working rules.

    Degraded mode includes but is not limited to communication failure, instrument defective, lost/damaged tablets.
