PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful for someone who wishes to complete a NQF Level 2 Learnership (or skills programme) in Saw Doctoring.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Sharpen knives and profile cutters used in lumber processing machines in the Lumber Mill.
  • Explain the inspections carried out on used/blunt and profile cutters used in the Lumber Mill.
  • Set up and adjust the knife and profile cutter grinding machines in the Saw Shop.
  • Sharpen knives and profile cutters using the appropriate grinding machines.
  • Carry out the routine maintenance of the knife and profile cutter grinding machines used in the Saw Shop. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competence in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to NQF Level 1.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the lumber milling process.
  • Skills competencies equivalent to Level 1 of Saw Doctoring as required by the NQF Level 1 Learnership. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Knives include planer knives, chipper knives and hogger knives.

    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environmental that can be described as the lumber mill with all the processing equipment.
  • The whole environment including equipment, tools and instruments that can be described as the Saw Doctor Shop in the Lumber Mill.
  • All the personnel involved in all the activities in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the material that is handled and used in this work area.
  • All the relevant work procedures and safety, health and environmental management requirements relating to the Saw Doctor Shop.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 2 in Saw Doctoring and specifically to sharpen knives and profile cutters used in lumber processing machines in the Lumber Mill.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because:
  • For foundational competence the Learner has to demonstrate basic comprehension and employ a narrow range of skills.
  • For practical competence the Learner has to show basic competence in a limited range of established and familiar contexts under general supervision and quality control.
  • For reflexive competence the Learner has to demonstrate the ability to handle some limited responsibility for quantity and quality of own output.

    The assembling of knife and profile cutter grinding machines in the Saw Shop ensures that knives and profile cutters are sharpened to prescribed standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate Personal Protective Clothing (PPC) is worn in accordance with organisation's policy and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Knives and profile cutters are sharpened safely in accordance with standard operating procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct sharpening of knives and profile cutters ensures the production of planed and moulded lumber products to prescribed standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Put knives and cutters in cutter blocks after sharpening.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Reasons for putting away sharpened knives and cutters are given. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Procedure to be followed in putting sharpened knives and cutters away is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Knives and cutters are put in the appropriate cutter blocks after sharpening according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Carry out the routine maintenance of the knife and profile cutter grinding machines used in the Saw Shop.

    Maintenance conducted is in line with company operating procedures.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An employed individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, the relevant responsible person in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. An unemployed Learner must arrange with the training provider for assessment.
  • Anyone assessing a Learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • The manner/method and source of providing the learning that will enable compliance with the requirements of this Unit Standard, must be accredited by the ETQA.
  • Moderation of the abovementioned assessment will be performed in the manner and by the moderator/s accredited for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • Assessment can be performed by means of oral testing, written tests and on-the-job observation. Formative assessment can be carried out during and after achievement of each specific outcome, and summative assessment at the conclusion of the training programme for this Unit Standard. Assessment will take place at a venue or workplace designated by the relevant assessor(s).
