PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to manage maintenance of all machines, tools and equipment used for Saw and cutter maintenance in Lumber Mill.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Develop a maintenance programme for all saw and cutter maintenance facilities in the Lumber Mill.
  • Maintain prescribed Saw Doctor Shop asset registers.
  • Control the implementation of the saw and cutter maintenance facilities' maintenance programme. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Mathematical Literacy and Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Understanding of the activities of the Lumber Milling process and specifically the details of all activities performed in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • Knowledge of work place procedures, health and safety measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment including equipment, tools and instruments which can be described as the Saw Doctor Shop of a Lumber Mill.
  • All personnel involved in all the activities of the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All material handled and processed in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the prescribed work place and safety, health and environmental management procedures relating to the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All tools, instrument, equipment and materials used for maintenance of equipment in the Saw Doctor Shop in Lumber Mill.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to training of a Learner to manage the maintenance of all machines, tools and equipment used for saw and cutter maintenance in the Lumber Mill.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 4, is appropriate because:
  • For foundational competence the Learner has to demonstrate possession of wide ranging technical skills, a broad knowledge base incorporating some basic theoretical concepts, and have the ability to assess, analyse and evaluate information independently.
  • For practical competence the Learner has to show the ability to operate in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar contexts under broad guidance and evaluation, and select from a considerable choice of procedures.
  • For reflexive competence the Learner has to demonstrate the ability to handle complete responsibility for quantity and quality of output, and possibly for that of others.

    Control the implementation of the saw and cutter maintenance facilities' maintenance programme.

    Maintenance of saw and cutter facility maintenance is done in accordance with company's procedures.

    Procedures used for checking the implementation of the maintenance facilities in the Lumber Mill is in line with company' operating procedure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Maintain prescribed Saw Doctor Shop asset registers.

    Asset registers are maintained in the prescribed format.

    Maintenance of prescribed Saw Doctor Shop assets is in line with company' operating procedure. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.

    Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
