PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to perform a complete shampoo, conditioning and treatment service. It will also enable learners to use shampoo and conditioning products to practice application techniques which are suitable for chemical products such as relaxer and colour without requiring any theoretical knowledge of the chemical products. This is designed to equip learners to assist stylists with chemical processes in the salon environment.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Perform a shampooing and conditioning service.
  • Perform hair and scalp treatment.
  • Perform basic massage service.
  • Perform application techniques.

    Selection of appropriate shampoo and conditioner is explained according to hair and scalp analysis and client requirements.

  • Analysis for hair includes but is not limited to porosity, elasticity, texture and density.
  • Analysis for scalp includes but is not limited to dry, normal, oily and dandruff.

    'Off-the-scalp' application techniques for a hair treatment are performed in accordance with industry standards.

    'Off-the-scalp' application techniques are performed simulating a virgin colour & relaxer application, in accordance with industry standards. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA in accordance with the current ETQA regulations.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Other ETQAs who have a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA would be responsible for moderation of achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
