PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to provide technical personnel with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to perform routine maintenance, repairs and Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) procedures on marine refrigerated containers.

Learners competent in this unit standard are able to:
  • Inspect and repair marine refrigerated container box exterior and interior structures and components.
  • Inspect marine refrigerated container systems.
  • Repair marine refrigerated container systems.
  • Carry out a pre trip inspection procedure. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that a learner has already achieved and is therefore competent in the following:
  • Understand basic refrigeration systems.
  • Perform fault finding and repair procedures.
  • Understand basic refrigeration system circuits and controls, their fault finding and repair procedures.
  • Operate marine refrigerated container instrumentation.
  • Identify the various types of marine refrigerated containers.
  • Understand and complete relevant inspection documentation.

    Recognition of Prior Learning

    Credits may be obtained by applying to an accredited/approved training provider/institution in order to have prior learning recognised in lieu of past work experience. Past experience must relate to the specific outcomes contained within this unit standard. The ensuing assessment of candidates seeking recognition of prior learning should not be so onerous as to deter them from doing so. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The range, as indicated under the specific outcomes, determine the scope and level of this unit standard.

    However, for the purpose of assessment:
  • The Perishable Products Export Control Board's (PPECB) Cold Chain Handling Protocols and standards are to be used and take precedent.
  • Non-specialised marine refrigerated containers include: "0ºC only", "above and below 0ºC", air & water cooled systems.
  • Marine refrigerated container and refrigeration system manufactures manuals and procedures will be used and adhered to where appropriate.
  • Employer/Client standard operating procedures are to be used and adhered to where appropriate.

    "Environment" includes, but is not limited to, maritime applications.

    The learner should be able to work autonomously with minimal supervision and according to worksite and manufacturer specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

    The various sources for maintenance information on different marine refrigerated containers are explained in terms of manufacturers' specifications and guidelines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Marine refrigerated container components are identified, their functions explained and typical maintenance and repair factors are discussed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Typical construction and sealing methods are identified and explained according to manufacturers' specifications and guidelines by identifying component parts and sealing materials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Common types of damage and common damage zones are identified and corrective action is described in terms of familiar solutions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Inspections are carried out using appropriate operating procedures and guidelines in accordance with industry, regulatory and legislative criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Repairs are carried out using appropriate operating procedures and guidelines and the reasons for malfunction and potential corrective action is explained.

    Safe working practices are explained, implemented, and adhered to in terms of the safety regulations and standards applicable to hazardous gases.

    Circuits and control system components are identified and their functions explained, by identifying circuit symbols and circuit operation according to standard industry practice.
