PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Maritime Sector who work/wish to work as an officer on the bridge of a ship. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sub-field and of the society by providing competent maritime officers who by planning and conducting seamanship evolutions, contribute to a safer environment on the ship and at sea. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills in directing others in carrying out a number of standard seamanship activities, which are needed to act as a vessel safety officer.

The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will, in the case of the Merchant Navy and the Fishing Industry, contribute to the economic upliftment of the country, and in the case of the South African Navy, contribute the preservation of human life and the defence of South African warships, territorial waters and/or area of responsibility, thus providing a safer and secure society for South African citizens.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of seamanship evolutions.
  • Execute routine seamanship evolutions during a bridge watch.
  • Evaluate the execution of seamanship evolutions. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Evolutions include but are not limited to replenish at sea, launch a lifeboat, seaboats, anchoring, mooring and berthing, man-overboard, transportation of persons or goods by means of ships boats, towing, fendering buoy laying and retrieval and vertical replenishment.
  • Evolutions in a SA Navy context include, targets and decoys, fleet work exercises, Oscar Man and rendezvous procedures.

    Demonstrate a knowledge of seamanship evolutions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A description is given of evolutions with reference to their purpose, key stages, required equipment and designated personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A description is given of operating procedures for seamanship evolutions with reference to the designated roles and responsibilities of crew and required commands. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A description is given of the required platform and ship states in accordance with standard operating procedures for each evolution. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A description is given of the importance of following safety procedures in terms of the potential impact on the evolution and crew safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A description is given of contingencies for deviations from expected procedures and possible corrective actions appropriate to the deviation.

    Execute routine seamanship evolutions during a bridge watch.

    Orders are issued that comply with standard operating procedures for the specific evolution.

    Orders includes but are not limited to the placement of personnel and equipment and the allocation of roles and responsibilities at the required time.

    Deviations from the evolution are addressed through monitoring.

  • Deviations includes deviations due to safety and expected progress.
  • Addressed includes but is not limited to new or modified instructions and the reporting or handing over to higher authority.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A suitable course and speed are maintained as required by the particular evolution. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ship state is ensured to be correct for the particular evolution. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

  • Hatches open or closed, pumps running or shut down, engine notice.

    Commands are issued appropriate to the context, progress and conduct of the evolution.

    Procedures are recorded in terms of time and actions taken.

    The ship is restored to its proper state in preparation for the next activity or evolution.

    Activities are evaluated to confirm that they have been carried out as directed and in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    Reports are prepared as per standard operating procedures which validate and/or make recommendations for improved development of effective training evolutions.
