PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of Autotronics or Automotive repair and maintenance require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. Qualifying learners are able to remove and fit mechanical and electrical automobile components from/to an automobile safely, in accordance with procedures and without damage to the vehicle. This unit standard may be used in the context of one or more of the following areas of specialisation:
  • Passenger vehicle.
  • Commercial vehicle.
  • Earthmoving equipment.
  • Lift truck.
  • Motor cycle.
  • Engine fitter.

    This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression and is a foundational unit standard for a motor mechanic. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment.

    Learners are also assumed to be competent in Mathematical literacy and Communication at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The ranges as indicated under the Specific Outcomes determine the scope and level of this unit standard. All work is performed under supervision and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare to remove or fit automobile components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Automobile components include any contraption, consisting of more than one part working together, and forms part of any one or more of the following systems:
  • Electrical.
  • Engine.
  • Drive train.
  • Brakes.
  • Hydraulics.
  • Pneumatics. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The component to be removed or fitted is identified from given documentation and workplace instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Documentation includes job cards, customer requests and manufacturer service schedules.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All tools and equipment required to perform the task are checked and prepared for use prior to commencing with the job. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Replacement parts or components required are confirmed to be available prior to commencing with the job. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Consequences of continuing with the task when all requirements are not available are explained in terms of productivity and utilisation of workshop space. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The vehicle is made safe to work on in accordance with vehicle manufacturer specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Remove and fit components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Removal and fitting includes the relevant trim, connectors, associated feed lines and any product specific procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The component is removed or fitted in accordance with workplace requirements and manufacturer recommendations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Openings are closed off to prevent foreign matter entering in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The purpose of closing off openings is explained in terms of contamination and equipment reliability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Components are connected in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Fluids are drained and/or filled according to workshop manual procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Tools and equipment are used in accordance with workshop procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Any faults are noted and dealt with in accordance with workshop procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Faults include worn, damaged, faulty or leaking parts. Workshop procedures may include repairing, replacing or reporting.

    Work is conducted in accordance with workplace and legislative health and safety requirements.

    Inspect and test fitted components.

    The component is visually inspected for leaks and post operational checks are performed according to workshop procedures.

    All fluid levels are inspected and confirmed to be in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    The component is tested for functionality in accordance with workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The component is ensured to function in accordance with manufacturer operating specifications.

    Apply safety procedures during the removal and fitting process. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Safety includes using personal protective equipment, adhering to workshop manual warnings and dispose of hazardous materials.
  • Hazardous materials include oils, coolant, fuels and cleaning agents.

    The work task is completed without incident, accident or injury and according to safety procedures.

    There is no damage to any component, vehicle, equipment or tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All workshop manual safety warnings and required actions before, during and after component removal and fitting are adhered to.

    Restore work area, complete and process documentation. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Restoring work area includes disposal of hazardous materials, tools and equipment packed away, work area cleaned.
  • Documentation includes completing job cards, check lists and reports.
