PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for people who are required to take representative samples in a metallurgical process.

This unit standard is intended to promote general skills in and knowledge of taking representative samples in a metallurgical process in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge relating to the taking of representative slurry and liquid samples in a metallurgical process.
  • Prepare to and take representative samples. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 1.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.

    Hazards and risks pertaining to the sampling process are identified and explained in terms of team safety, health and environmental issues. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate preventative measures are described in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons for taking samples are explained in terms of process control, analysis required and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The operation of equipment required for sampling liquids and slurries is described with reference to obtaining a representative sample. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The principles of sampling liquids and slurries are explained with reference to obtaining a representative sample. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principles must include:
  • Size of increment.
  • Frequency of increment.
  • Location of sampling point.

    Security procedures are explained in accordance with specified requirements.

    The interlock systems and lockout procedures pertaining to the taking of samples are listed in accordance with legal and operational requirements.

    The personal protective, safety and lockout equipment is used and maintained in accordance with specified requirements.

    The tools and equipment to be used are identified, verified, used and maintained in accordance with operational requirements.

    Authority to proceed with the sampling process is obtained in accordance with operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Representative samples are taken in accordance with operational requirements to meet sampling, security, safety, health and environmental standards.
