PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for adhering to occupational health and safety practices pertaining to shaft operations. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Describe specified requirements in the event of operational problems pertaining to shaft operations.
  • Describe specified requirements in the event of emergencies pertaining to shaft operations.
  • Explain the requirements regarding occupational health and safety practices in the workplace.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe specified requirements in the event of operational problems pertaining to shaft operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The action to be taken in the event of equipment failure, as well as the consequences of such failure to occupational health, safety and productivity, is explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    Explanations must include defects involving the following:
  • Signalling and communication arrangements.
  • Arresting devices.
  • Shaft safety devices.
  • Shaft conveyances and attachments.
  • Super structure.
  • Illumination. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The action to be taken in the event of a key lost, as well as the consequences of such loss to safety, is explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The action to be taken in the event of confined workspace due to incorrect stacking and placement of material and equipment, as well as the consequences thereof to occupational health and safety, is explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The action to be taken when the conveyance is locked at an incorrect position in the shaft, as well as the consequences to occupational health, safety and productivity if that should happen, is explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    Explanations must include the following:
  • Onsetter positioned in the conveyance.
  • Onsetter positioned on the landing station. 

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe specified requirements in the event of emergencies pertaining to shaft operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The action to be taken in the event of emergencies in the shaft, as well as the consequences for occupational health and safety, should requirements not be adhered to, is explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    Emergencies in the shaft must include the following:
  • Fire in the shaft.
  • The obstruction of conveyance in the shaft.
  • Derailments in the shaft.
  • Power failure.
  • Accident involving persons in the shaft.
  • Damage to the shaft.
  • Flooding of the shaft bottom. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The action to be taken in the event of riots, unauthorised entry to the conveyance and unauthorised operation of safety devices, as well as the consequences for occupational health and safety, should requirements not be adhered to, are explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the legal requirements regarding health and safety practices in the workplace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The requirements regarding housekeeping practices and hygienic matters in the workplace, and the consequences for health and safety, should requirements not be adhered to, are explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember, we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate is able to achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well-documented principles of assessment, namely appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.

    Motivation with respect to number of specific outcomes:

    Even though there are less than four specific outcomes in this unit standard it represents a whole competency. It is NOT merely a description of tasks, jobs or procedures but it focuses on outcomes of activity. It also has a broad application across a range of contexts as stipulated in the unit standard.

    In addition this unit standard is considered as a milestone of learning in the sector. It is worth recognizing in its own right, as it is attributable to and achievable by an individual.
