PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to design a gas installation for industry, commercial or domestic use.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Define the scope of the gas installation design for a basic LPG or natural gas installation.
  • Use scientific methods to determine a variety of typical design parameters.
  • Select gas appliances for a basic LPG or natural gas installation.
  • Design the gas storage and delivery system for a basic LPG or natural gas installation.
  • Design the delivery piping configuration for a basic LPG or natural gas installation.
  • Verify the overall safety of a basic LPG or natural gas installation design.
  • Prepare design documents.

    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The typical context of this unit standard assumes a new domestic or commercial gas installation site or an existing site requiring modifications. The typical scope of this unit standard is confined to a LPG or natural gas installation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Define the scope of the gas installation design for a basic LPG or natural gas installation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Limitations of own design authority are described as outlined by regulations and licence scope. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Limitations include but are not limited to number of cylinders, bulk pressure vessels, system pressure, medical applications, cryogenic equipment, automotive installations and on-site generation equipment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of a proposed installation is defined in terms of the appliances used, the gas type and the intended duty (load) of the system based on customer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A basic system layout sketch is prepared indicating positioning of delivery system, routing of piping and positioning of appliances/applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Special requirements are analysed in terms of overall design impact. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Special requirements include routing, delivery system type, capacity and pressure, special features, components, appliances.
  • Analysis includes determining the viability and impact of special requirements on the overall design, conflicts with standards and regulations and whether the design falls within the scope of own licensing authority.

    Use scientific methods to determine a variety of typical design parameters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different systems of units used in gas installation design are converted to standard SI units using standard scientific principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Relevant gas data required for design calculations is obtained and converted to standard SI units using standard scientific principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Surface, area and volume calculations are performed using mathematical principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Flow and pressure drop calculations are performed using basic engineering methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Various design parameters and design sizes are obtained with the use of selection tables, graphs and graphical methods. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Select gas appliances for a basic LPG or natural gas installation. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Appliances include but are not limited to gas geysers, stoves, ovens, furnaces, heaters, burners and lighting systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appliances are selected based on suitability and compliance to requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The volume requirements for all appliances are determined using applicable engineering techniques. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Techniques include calculations, data sheets, tables and other graphical methods.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different components associated with the appliances are selected and sized using accepted design practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components include piping, valves, regulators, filters, flues, blowers, mixing system, control components, ignition system, silencers and ventilation system.

    A detailed layout sketch is prepared indicating positioning of appliances and routing of piping.

    Design the gas storage and delivery system for a basic LPG or natural gas installation.

    The storage and delivery concept is selected based on system requirements, suitability for the application and client specification. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    A delivery system could include cylinders, dumpies, on-site generation, bulk tanks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The storage and delivery system is specified based on the overall appliance duty and by using applicable engineering techniques. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • System specification should include the delivery volume, pressure and minimum storage capacity required.
  • Techniques include calculations, data sheets, tables and other graphical methods.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different components associated with the storage and delivery system are selected and sized using accepted design practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components should include but are not limited to piping, manifolds, valves, regulators, vessels, cylinders, vaporisers, metering.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Different components associated with the piping/reticulation system are selected and sized using accepted design practice.

    Components should include but are not limited to piping, manifolds, valves, regulators, fittings, metering.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A detailed layout sketch is prepared indicating routing of the piping/reticulation components.

    Verify the overall safety of a basic LPG or natural gas installation design.
