PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to explain the operation of pumps, compressors, heat exchangers and scales in a gas installation.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the application of pumps in gas installations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the operating principles of pumps.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the application of compressors in gas installations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the operating principles of basic compressors.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence against communication and mathematical literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical context of this unit standard assumes an existing or new domestic or commercial gas installation site.

    The typical scope of this unit standard includes one of the following but is not limited to:
  • LPG installations.
  • Natural gas installations.
  • Compressed gas installations.

    Symbols used to indicate pumps are used in freehand drawings in accordance with draughting conventions.

    Indicators and reasons for poor pump performance are described in accordance with the given range. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The reasons include electric faults, bearing failure, fluid temperature, low feed tank level, fluid composition, cavitation, mechanical problems, corrosion, leaking seals.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Drive and power transfer equipment used for pumps and compressors are explained in accordance with the given range. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Power transfer equipment includes electric motors, gearboxes, direct drives, chain drives and belt drives.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Safety features and equipment employed with pumps are described in accordance with safety requirements.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the operating principles of pumps. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Pump types include centrifugal- and reciprocating pumps.

    Basic working principles of pumps are described in accordance with operational procedures.

    Simple pump system configurations are identified and explained using a freehand sketch and in accordance with operational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Configurations include feed tank, suction line, discharge line, return line, standby pump, and motor with switchgear and block valves.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Freehand drawings of simple pump configurations are made and described as per draughting conventions.

    Indicators and reasons for poor equipment performance are identified and described in accordance with the given range.

    A freehand drawing of a simple configuration for a compressor system is made and explained in accordance with operational procedures.

    Configuration includes compressor, gas inlet, knockout drum, suction line, discharge line, bypass line, block valves and motor.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    High-pressure safety devices are identified and their purpose described in accordance with safety requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety devices include spillback lines, relief valves (RVs), safety valves (SVs), bursting discs, trips and alarms.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Demonstrate an understanding of heat exchangers in gas installations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Different types of heat exchangers and their applications are described as applied in the gas installation industry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The range of heat exchangers includes shell and tube, double tube, plate, air coolers, vapourisers and fin tube types.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The advantages and disadvantages of different heat exchanger types are explained based on typical industry experience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Symbols used to indicate heat exchangers are used in simple freehand drawings in accordance with draughting conventions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Indicators and reasons for poor heat exchanger performance are described in accordance with the given range. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The reasons include fouling, leaks, obstruction, channelling, poor flow, vibration, corrosion and cooling/heating medium temperature.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Components of heat exchangers are identified as by the given range.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 3 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency.
  • Only an Assessor with considerable first hand experience in gas installations will assess the learner's competency.
