PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing, engineering and technology require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and assembly qualifications. The learner will be capable of carrying out static and dynamic balancing of rotating equipment under limited supervision. This will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in electro-mechanical winding and related qualifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for electro-mechanical winding in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner has already learned to use and care for complex measuring equipment, and to interpret relevant legislation regarding safety in the working environment. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • Hazards may include but are not limited to working at heights, working with movable components and chemical substances.
  • All activities occur under limited supervision.
  • Statutory requirements include but are not limited to the OHAS Act, SABS 0142, Safe Rigging procedures.

    Personal protective equipment appropriate for balancing components is identified, selected and checked according to worksite procedures.

    The purpose of conducting a quality check on tools and equipment is explained in terms of safety and production.

    Uses and functions of personal protective equipment are described in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Parties affected by the balancing function are informed of progress and activities according to worksite procedures.

    Authorisation to balance components is obtained according to worksite procedures and statutory requirements.

    Safety of the work area is ensured according to worksite procedures and statutory requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Consequences of not following safe working procedures are explained in terms of safety and production. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Add or remove mass to balance components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Material to add mass may include lead, plastercine, putty and metals.
  • Methods of securing/fixing the balancing mass include welding, brazing, lead wiping, bolts, nuts drilling and grinding.
  • Methods of removing and adding mass include the use of hand held power tools.

    Components to be balanced are positioned and secured in the balancing equipment according to worksite procedures.

    Out of balance position and mass is determined and corrective action taken according to worksite procedures.

    Components are re-rotated and final adjustments made according to worksite procedures.

    Reasons for positioning and securing components are explained in relation to the balancing operation.

    The consequences of not balancing components correctly are explained in terms of the effect on the rotation of the component.

    Personal protective equipment is used according to worksite procedures.

    The work environment is restored to a safe and serviceable condition according to worksite procedures.

    Balancing reports are completed and submitted to relevant personnel according to worksite procedures.

    Consequences of not accurately completing and returning documentation are explained in terms of loss of control over components.
