PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing, engineering and technology require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and assembly qualifications. The learner will be capable of operating an electrical test plant, analysing and interpreting results for the purpose of testing electro-mechanical machines. This will contribute to the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in electro-mechanical winding and related qualifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for electro-mechanical winding in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner has already learned to interpret relevant legislation regarding safety in the working environment and is familiar with basic machine design and wiring of circuits related to electro-mechanical machines. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • Electro-mechanical machines and sub-assemblies include but are not limited to L.V and H.V machines.
  • Electro-mechanical machines include but are not limited to A.C and D.C machines.
  • Hazards may include but are not limited to working at heights, working with movable components and chemical substances.
  • All activities occur under limited supervision.
  • Statutory requirements include but is not limited to the OHAS Act and SABS 0142.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Work instructions are interpreted and a sequence of operations is determined according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools and equipment required to test components are identified, selected and checked for functionality according to work site procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tools and equipment include dynamometers, volt meters, ampmeters, thermometers, watt meters, ratiometer, vibration analyser, osciloscope, MG sets and tachometer.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Pre-operational inspection of tools and equipment is carried out according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Faults and defects of tools and equipment are identified and corrective action taken according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Personal protective equipment appropriate for testing components is identified, selected and checked according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The purpose of conducting a quality check on tools and equipment is explained in terms of safety and production.

    Uses and functions of personal protective equipment are described in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Parties affected by the testing process are informed of progress and activities according to worksite procedures.

    Tests include but are not limited to heat run test, lock rotor test, open circuit rotor test, impedance test, MAG flux/curve test, ratio test, vibration test and load/no-load test.

    The consequences of not conducting tests accurately are explained in terms of the effect on the component and production.

    Personal protective equipment appropriate for the test is used according to worksite procedures.

    Components are removed from testing equipment and inspected for general condition according to worksite procedures.
