PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of dismantling automotive main components for inspection or repairs. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • The usage of engineering hand tools, power tools, workshop equipment, and measuring equipment.
  • The usage of automobile lifting equipment.

    All work is performed with little or no supervision in accordance with operational, repair manual specifications and procedures and in compliance with occupational safety, health and environmental legislation. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and prepare work area and component dismantling task. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Planning includes reading and interpreting the job card/work instructions and obtaining service data.
  • Preparing includes selecting appropriate tools and equipment and cleaning component prior to dismantling.
  • Appropriate tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment as being most suited to complete the task to a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools and equipment are selected appropriate to the task required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Relevant service data is obtained in accordance with component make and model.

    Component is cleaned according to company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Component is prepared for dismantling in accordance with workshop manual procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not adequately preparing are explained in terms of the potential safety hazard and lost production. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Dismantle components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Components include transmissions, axles, engines, differentials, torque converters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The component is dismantled according to workshop manual procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Work is conducted in accordance with all workshop manual safety warnings and required actions before, during and after component dismantling task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Dismantled parts are packed out in accordance with workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The component, equipment and tools are treated with the necessary care and are not damaged. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The reasons for following a specific dismantling procedure are explained. The consequences of not following the procedure are explained in terms of the impact on the process and potential damages. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare component parts for storage. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Preparation of component parts for storage includes cleaning of parts, rust prevention, tagging, plastic wrapping, and packing of parts in a container/basket or onto a rack and storing of parts in a designated place. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Component parts are cleaned and treated for rust prevention in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Component parts are marked and protected for storage in accordance with workplace requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Component parts are stored in designated place until needed for use in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The reasons for preparing parts for storage are explained in terms of the prevention of damage to the parts and availability when required. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply safety procedures during component removal task. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Safety includes using personal protective equipment, adhering to workshop manual warnings and dispose of hazardous materials.
  • Hazardous materials include oils, coolant, fuels and cleaning agents. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The component is dismantled without incident, accident, injury or damage to component, vehicle, equipment and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All workshop manual safety warnings and required actions before, during and after vehicle component dismantling task are adhered to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Applicable SHE procedures are followed during the vehicle component removal task. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Restore work area, complete and process documentation. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Restoring work area includes disposal of hazardous materials, tools and equipment packed away, work area cleaned.
  • Documentation includes completing job cards, check lists and reports.
  • Reports include reports and summaries of work completed.
  • Process includes submissions according to company procedures.

    The work area is restored in accordance with workplace and SHE requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools and equipment are cleaned and stored in accordance with workplace and SHE requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of not leaving the workplace in the appropriate state are explained in terms of safety hazards and production. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Documentation is completed and processed in accordance with workplace procedures.

    The reasons for the various documentation are explained in terms of their main functions.
