PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to identify and explain the principle parts of fishing vessels and other vessels. The learner is also able to explain how a vessel is stabilised and its safety ensured. The person is able to describe ship types, their purposes and the parts of these vessels, as well as to explain how a ship's watertight integrity is maintained.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Identifying the principal parts and fittings of a vessel.
  • Describing vessel stability and safety terminology.
  • Explaining vessel stability and safety requirements.
  • Explaining stowage safety requirements.
  • Describing the types of vessels in operation.
  • Describing systems on a vessel.
  • Explaining the need to maintain the watertight integrity of the vessel.

    The following scope and context applies to the whole standard:
  • This unit standard deals with the basic knowledge of vessel construction and stability.
  • Work must be carried out in accordance in accordance with the relevant maritime regulations.
  • Vessels may include any commercial vessel engaged on near coastal voyages, limited or unlimited voyages.
  • Can demonstrate competence by oral examination and assessment of evidence obtained from one or more of the following:

    > Approved in-service training.
    > Approved training ship.
    > Approved simulator training.
  • SAMSA's Code for South African Maritime Qualifications: Study matrices and syllabuses for fishing and marine motorman qualifications, Naval Architecture Module 1 and 2, any amendments or equivalent.

    The condition of a stiff and/or tender ship is described in terms of the danger associated with it. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The condition of free surface effect is explained in terms of the danger associated with it. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Drawling the propeller shaft(s), the opening of hull fittings and the period between inspections is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The purpose of free board and reserve buoyancy is explained with examples of each.

    The terms displacement, deadweight and gross tonnage are explained with examples of their practical use.

    The reason for the hull survey, items surveyed and the period between the surveys for the Local General Certificate is described.

    The relationship between centre of gravity, centre of buoyancy and metacentric height is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons for having efficient means of drawing water rapidly from the deck and the danger of water trapped on deck is explained.

    The requirement that the ship is securely battered down for proceeding to sea and severe weather conditions is described.

    The requirement that the bilge pumping system must always be operating properly is described.

    The requirement that the safe operating limits of the ship must not be exceed in normal operations is described focussing on consequences of not doing so.

    The requirement that the ship must always be properly stowed is described with an explanation of the consequences of not doing so.

    Describe the types of vessels in operation.

    Watertight integrity includes but is not limited to:
  • Hatch covers, watertight doors, sounding pipes and vents, offal chutes, scuppers and freeing ports.
