PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is specifically for learners in the Textile Manufacturing formal sector working in, or who wish to work in inspection processes in a relevant factory.

Learners assessed as competent against this standard will be capable of:
  • Preparing machinery, equipment and materials for processing.
  • Operating equipment and controlling production process.
  • Identifying and recording faults in line with the relevant inspection and grading system. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is applicable to inspection processes within the Textile sector.

    Operations may include, but are not limited to:
  • Finished goods, Inspection and grading.
  • Inspection of greige goods plus any two of the following.
    > Off rolling machine.
    > Brushing and cropping machine.
    > Plating (folding) machine.
    > Wrapping machine.
    > Batching machine.
    > Sewing machine (seam sewing). 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    Prepare machinery, equipment and materials for processing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Relevant process specifications are obtained and interpreted according to product requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pre-start procedures and checks are carried out in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Input material is checked against process specifications and reject non-conforming materials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Process machines are set to relevant specifications to suit process materials and process operations. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Operate equipment and control production process.

    Machines are started up and operated according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Process material are loaded/unloaded to maintain continuous production. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Process operations are monitored and adjusted to ensure optimum production. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Machine, process and product faults are identified and corrective action implemented accordingly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Standard shift changeover procedures are followed according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Identify and record faults in line with the relevant inspection and grading system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Process material inspection is conducted and all faults are identified accordingly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All relevant inspection information is recorded both manually and/or electronically using correct codes or ferences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Inspected material is graded according to relevant grading system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All applicable mendable faults are identified and mended according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Report severe or specified types of faults immediately. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    All relevant process/production records are completed according to standard operating procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation. All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.

  • Relevant sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • The role of the Inspection Department to both the Process Departments and the Customer.
