PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the qualification: CTFL National Certificate in Manufacturing Processes at NQF Level 2. It is specifically for learners in the Textile Manufacturing formal sector working in, or who wish to work in the application of textile testing techniques in a relevant factory.

Learners assessed as competent against this standard will be capable of:
  • Preparing raw material and testing equipment conditions.
  • Conducting testing of materials.
  • Conducting Laboratory control procedures. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF Level 1.

    Learners must be able to:
  • Speak, read and write in English.
  • Do basic mathematic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and the calculation of areas, volumes and quantities. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is applicable to textile testing techniques processes within the Textile sector. Operations will be applicable to the collection and testing of samples from all departments in a Textile Company and to all basic testing procedures.

    Learners will need to combine applicable testing areas in order to obtain a total of 36 credits for this Unit Standard.

    Testing will include, but not be limited to the relevant combinations of the following test areas:
  • Fibre, Yarn Preparation and Manufacture.
  • Fabric Preparation.
  • Fabric and Carpet Manufacture.
  • Chemicals, Colouration, Physical Properties.
  • Garments and Non-Wovens.

    36 credits for applicable combinations of testing areas.

    Prepare raw material and testing equipment conditions.

    Identify and classify the characteristics and origins of selected raw materials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Identify the properties and classes of chemicals used in testing and follow their required handling procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Follow set procedures in respect of the preparation, cleaning, storage, handling and calibration of testing equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Observe the test specifications relating to the requirements of Company, Industry and Customer.

    Conduct testing of materials.

    Collect, prepare and test samples to relevant test specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Record test results to Company formats.

    Reference the test procedure to the range of tests available for selected test samples.

    Observe the disposal methods of completed test materials according to the test specifications.

    Identify and record faults in line with the relevant inspection and grading system.

    Adhere to all requirements relating to test conditions and work areas as specified in the Safety, Health and Environment regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Present test results in both statistical and graph formats manually and electronically. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Identify and implement necessary action on critical non-conformance test results. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Recognise and implement necessary actions on incorrectly collected samples and/or malfunctioning of test equipment.

    Apply strict Laboratory Housekeeping procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation. All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.
