PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will equip learners with the skills, knowledge and values to participate effectively in workplace activities within the CTFL manufacturing industries, specifically in the clothing industry. This unit standard will provide the learner to cut and prepare materials.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Preparing materials for cutting.
  • Preparing machines, equipment and tools.
  • Performing operations on cut work.
  • Applying safety standards when operating machines.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are required to demonstrate fundamental competencies, specified below, at ABET Level 4 or NQF 1.

    Learners must be able to:
  • Speak, read and write in English.
  • Do basic mathematic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and the calculation of areas, volumes and quantities. 
    		•

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This standard applies to the clothing sector:
  • The learner will be assessed on all manual operations performed in the Cutting Room of a clothing manufacturer and shall include, spreading, ply numbering, fusing and sorting and packing cut work.
  • The learner will be assessed on all the machines associated with manual operations in the cutting room and can include automatic and manual spreading machines, ticketing, soabar and stamping machines, strip and small part fusing machines.
  • Basic maintenance and machine set up functions shall include, cleaning, checking, adjusting and reporting machine faults performed according to correct method, time and quality standards, as determined by company and recognised industry standards.
  • The correct method, time and quality standards for all manual cutting room operations must be applied, as determined by company and recognised industry standards.
  • An efficiency level of 80% for each manual cutting room operation must be achieved and maintained for one week.
  • Fabric types can include wovens, non-wovens and knits.

    Prepare materials for cutting.

    Materials are correctly identified and checked against a worksheet/specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Material discrepancies are identified and rectified or reported on, according to specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A cutting table is prepared according to the supplied marker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Splicing positions are correctly marked according to lay plan or marker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Fabric plies are laid according to lay plan and marker length using appropriate equipment and tools, and according to required quality standards (fabric tension, edge alignment, splicing, end allowances) method and time standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare machines, equipment and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Machines, machine parts, equipment and tools relevant to manual cutting room operations are identified and listed and functions are correctly described, as specified in relevant equipment manuals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Machines, equipment and tools are cleaned regularly according to standard company practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Machine and equipment faults are identified, basic maintenance is performed to rectify faults and major faults are reported, according to relevant equipment manuals standard company practice and quality standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform operations on cut work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Cut work is sorted, tied, packed and placed in appropriate bins or workstations for subsequent operations in the cutting room or sewing floor in accordance with bundle list. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Cut work is accurately ply numbered according to required method, quality and time standard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cut work is fused according to correct quality standards (temperature, pressure, bonding, accuracy) method and time standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply safety standards when operating machines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Correct safety procedures are demonstrated when operating and controlling machines, equipment and tools, in line with equipment specifications and company safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Workplace Health and Safety Rules and procedures are described and adhered to as determined by company health & safety policies and procedures and safety legislation. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Learning programmes that will enable the achievement of this unit standard will be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Assessors who assess the competency of learners against this standard must be qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA.

    Moderators qualified and registered with the appropriate ETQA must conduct moderation.

    All external moderation will be conducted at the discretion of the relative ETQA.
