This unit standard reflects the skills required to monitor the quality of the input materials and the manufactured packaging or printed product that is:
  • Ensuring all non-conforming products, components and materials are marked or removed from the production line.
  • Ensure all defective products, components and materials are recorded and reported.

    It also reflects the understanding of:
  • Basic machine operations, the different types of input materials for printing and packaging and the basic concepts of quality.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and level of this unit standard is indicated by range statements related to the specific outcomes. The work reflected in this unit standard is normally performed under supervision. The work will be guided by relevant worksite procedures, manufacturers' specifications and safety, health and environmental legislation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Conduct visual checks on incoming materials and components and the manufactured product. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Checks include monitoring of product mass, dimensions, colour or any other critical part of the product specification.
  • Incoming materials and components include paper and inks.
  • Paper includes coated paper, uncoated paper and cast-coated paper.
  • Product includes pouches, bags and sacks.

    Range of checks are conducted in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All non-conforming products, components and materials are marked or removed from the production line.

    Marking could be in the form of writing directly on the product or attaching labels.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Measure products, components and materials and conduct operational on-line tests. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Measuring includes checking delivered components and materials against production orders. Operational on-line tests include colour measurement, colour register.

    Measuring instruments and equipment are used and stored in accordance with specified requirements.

    Recognise defects and mark or remove defective materials, products or components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Defects may relate to typesetting, location on page, quality of images, the registration, the quality of colour reproduction on the paper, the reproduction of details and their correct location on the sheet in all colour separations/ colours in accordance with the original.
